Burcu Akarçay

Contemporary Figurative Oil Painter

Working primarily in oil, my practice explores the human figure as a site of movement, tension, and psychological presence. Rooted in contemporary figurative painting, my work is shaped by an ongoing investigation of light and its ability to reveal, distort, and dissolve the body within space.

Ballet dancers, portraits, and organic forms recur throughout my paintings, allowing me to examine the fragile balance between control and release. Structured compositions are disrupted by loose brushwork, layered surfaces, and moments of abstraction, creating a tension between physical precision and emotional immediacy.

Light functions not simply as illumination, but as a structural and emotional force. It fragments the figure, intensifies gesture, and creates spaces that move between intimacy and distance.

My background in Fine Arts Education at Uludağ University, followed by studies at the London College of Fashion, informs my sensitivity to anatomy, fabric, silhouette, and movement. Across my work, the body becomes less a subject to be represented than a vessel through which vulnerability, restraint, and fleeting states of human presence can emerge.
